SuperRace draws 30,000 people in one day... a new attendance record
A new attendance record has been set for Korea's largest motorsports event.
On the 19th, 29,881 visitors visited the 2023 CJ Logistics Super Race on a single day. This is the highest attendance for a single final round since the inception of the Super Race. The previous record was 29,764 for the Round 1 final on April 28, 2019.
Round 5 of the 2023 CJ Logistics Super Race Championship was held at Everland Speedway (2.538 kilometers, 37 laps for Super 6000) in Yongin, Gyeonggi-do, on the 19th and 20th. The Super 6000 class, the flagship class of SuperRace, was held as the first night race in the Seoul metropolitan area on the 19th.
The winner was Kim Jae-hyun (Nexen-Volgas Motorsport). He started on the top grid after topping qualifying and had contact with Jang Hyun-jin (Seohan GP) early in the race. He was able to get under Jang's chin in the closing stages of the race, but was the first to take the checkered flag with a time of 48:49.444, 0.179 seconds faster than Jang. He was followed by Jang Hyun-jin (Seohan GP) and Jung Chung-cheol (Nexen-Volgas Motorsport).
"The Speedway Night course puts a lot of pressure on the brakes, and I want to thank the team for making it possible for me to hold on," said Kim Jae-hyun after the win. "I had a lot of wheel lock-ups in the early starts while defending my position. I started to lose a lot of grip on my right front tire in the middle of the race, so I was very concerned about my pace in second place."
Kim also took home the CJ Logistics Fastest Lap Award, which is given to the driver with the fastest lap time in the final of each round. His 안전놀이터 time of 1:17.512 on the fifth lap earned him one additional driver point.
With 30 driver points for the round, Kim jumped to second place overall. The gap between him and the overall leader, Lee Chan-jun (Xtar Racing), is eight points. Lee, who was handicapped by 100 kilograms this round, finished eighth.
In the GT class on the 20th, Lee Dong-ho (IRENE Motorsport) recorded his second win of the season. After taking pole position (meaning the front row of the final starting grid) in the previous four rounds but missing out on the win due to a retirement, Lee made up for it with a win in round five.
In the M class, Kim Min-hyun (V.E.I.T.) took the win. For the second round in a row, Rotor (Thailand, Euromotorsport) popped the champagne at the highest point of the Sports Prototype Cup Korea. Nearly 10,000 people (9,019) attended the event.
The next round of the Super 6000 class will be held at the Korea International Circuit (KIC) in Yeongam-gun, Jeollanam-do, on September 23-24 with the Jeonnam GT.
