Spain is on top of the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023. Spain, ranked No. 6 in the FIFA rankings, defeated No. 4 England 1-0 in the tournament final on Tuesday at Sydney Stadium Australia, thanks to an early goal from Olga Carmona.

Spain lifted its first-ever Women's World Cup trophy. They were knocked out in the group stage at their first appearance in Canada in 2015 and reached the round of 16 at the 2019 Women's World Cup in France. This was their third time on top.

Spain advanced to the round of 16 by finishing second in their group, beating Costa Rica 3-0 and Zambia 5-0 before falling to Japan 0-4.

As if the loss to Japan was a deterrent, they became the "Invincible Fleet" afterward. They thrashed Switzerland 5-1 in the round of 16 and then beat the Netherlands 2-1 in the quarterfinals. They then defeated Sweden 2-1 in the semifinals to reach the final.

The final opponent, England, had a history with Spain. Last year, England defeated Spain 2-1 in overtime in the quarterfinals of the European Women's Soccer Championship. England beat Spain in the quarterfinals and then went on to defeat Sweden and Germany to win the title.

The final, the first between European teams in 20 years since Germany and Sweden in 2003, started with a back-and-forth affair, with England's Lauren Hemp hitting the crossbar in the 16th minute and Spain's best chance a 토토사이트 minute later denied by a super save from the England goalkeeper.

The tense 0-0 balance was broken in the 29th minute. A pass from Mariona Caldentei on the left flank was met by Carmona, who found space in the box and finished with a left-footed shot.

Spain missed a chance to take the lead in the 19th minute of the second half when Henipher Hermoso missed a penalty kick opportunity.

However, they withstood a flurry of attacks from England in the remaining minutes to hold on to their one-point lead and secure the win.

Midfielder Aitana Bonmati (Barcelona), who led Spain to the title, won the Golden Ball, which is awarded to the best player. Spain's 2003-born forward Salma Parajuelo was named Young Player of the tournament.
